(Mattaponi & Chickahominy)

Pastor of Glorieta Baptist Church in Oklahoma City. Also a Southern Baptist missionary with the North American Mission Board. He launched First Nations Gospel Storyers in 2019.

PAUL STRAUBEL

Director of Oak Hills Center for Indian Ministries and has served in Native American ministry since 2004. His passion is to mobilize people to work together to
build the church among Native American people.

The Church and Language

In a context where indigenous languages are increasingly in danger of dying, is there still a place for using the indigenous language in the church?

Introduction

In a context where indigenous languages are increasingly in danger of dying, is there still a place for using the indigenous language in the church? What value can language serve in evangelism and discipleship if younger generations no longer speak it? Consider with us how using the local language in the context of the church can be an important strategy for strengthening the Native/First Nations Christian identity as well as for helping communities move towards their language revitalization goals. Explore ideas for how to bring local language into the church, even in contexts where language use is limited. Language is a gift from God and as a church we have the opportunity to help steward that gift so future generations can know God within their cultural context.

Ryan O'Leary

Ryan is a member of the Bois Forte Band of Ojibwe in northern MN. He has served in a variety of leadership roles within Indigenous nations for the last 25+ years. These roles include as a tribal economic development board member, tribal government administrator, pastor of a largely Indigenous congregation in Minneapolis, as a leader for On Eagles’ Wings ministry, leader/recruiter for the Native American National Prayer Breakfast outreach, and as a tribal college faculty member. Ryan’s life has been featured in Tribal Trails Christian television program as well as Without Reservation radio program. Ryan currently leads the First Peoples Initiative, a ministry to all First Peoples groups in North America and also serves as the President of the National Association of Native Evangelicals.

Carletta Lahn

For 25 years Carletta Lahn has served with SIL, an international organization committed to serving language communities around the world through Bible translation, Scripture engagement and Language development. She spent 16 years in Peru working with various indigenous organizations to help them achieve their ministry goals. For the past 9 years she has served in North America, supporting Bible engagement and language related work among first peoples and immigrant populations in the US and Canada.
